The Virtual Museum for Contemporary Art from China is an archive that documents important artists, art activities, and art works from contemporary China. This museum provides a different perspective on contemporary issues. "Contemporary art" means art works and activities that took place between 1940s and 2000 and beyond. This period of contemporary can be divided into three political phases. The first is the Republican Period, the period when China was actively seeking and appropriating ideas from the West. The Republican Period was followed by the People's Republic Period, when Marxism was married to old Confucian China. The last period-and the core period of this site-is the period when Chinese artists moved onto the international stage of art and began to play an important role; it is a period of new art. We devote this site to those artists who are innovative groundbreakers, those who have made changes to the art of contemporary China.
