No other period nearly is like the time 1970s, when so many forces shook the nation. From the end of 1960s, under the leadership of Jiang Qing, Chinese art was enlisted to serve the political struggle. The famous eight models Jingju, Beijing Operas, represent the highest level of transplanting the traditional culture toward contemporary politics. Art in other media-such as oil painting, sculpture, and figure painting with traditional Chinese ink on paper-became an equally well developed technique, one that reached a level never before achieved. By participating in political propaganda, many young people developed and refined their artistic talents. A few national-level art exhibitions held at the end of 1970s produced superstars who still stand high in China's art world.
